Norwegian Air announced on Monday, May 30, that it will purchase dozens of 737 MAX 8 jets directly from Boeing, without intermediaries.
The low-cost company from Norway had announced that it would go against competitors and start buying planes directly from factories , instead of leasing them from banks and finance companies (lessores) on long-term contracts.
Now, the company announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with Boeing for a new commitment to purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The agreement also includes options for an additional 30 aircraft.
The 50 aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2028, on a schedule that corresponds to the lease expirations of the current aircraft in the fleet.
The pre-delivery payment will be made with the profit from the company’s own operations. The company is expected to save millions of Norwegian kroner in the long run by not making the monthly lease payment.
The parties’ agreement is, in principle, subject to various closing conditions, which are expected to be completed by the end of June 2022.
