Amid criticism for what some of the press is calling “representing toxic masculinity”, the new Top Gun movie flies high and is already the most profitable feature of the year in the United States, surpassing Marvel.
Despite the incredible spells of the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” , audiences seem to have chosen for the charms of the real maneuvers of Top Gun’s F-18 Super Hornet fighters, according to the latest poll of blockbusters.
Recently, the “Marvel Universe Formula” was surpassed by the aviation-inspired feature, which follows the 1986 classic and which marked the career of Tom Cruise, becoming the most watched aviation film in history (and the film of war also more successful, if you consider it in this category, surpassing the equally acclaimed “American Sniper”, with Bradley Cooper).
In “Top Gun: Maverick”, the fidelity to the first film and to military aviation as a whole has greatly pleased the public, who have gone to the cinema more than once to see the film. The set of advanced fighters, with little CGI, established actors and a practically impossible mission (ironically) was a recipe that, for some journalists, would no longer be successful these days.
Despite the criticism, Top Gun maintains its leadership in the year. In the overall profitability ranking, Top Gun surpassed Doctor Strange , including following the recipe from the first Marvel Universe movie, Iron Man, where an egocentric military middle man saves the day.
In Tom Cruise’s film, Maverick’s personality is maintained and it’s no wonder: if the film is about a US military school, the actors are expected to have characters that are somewhat motivated and exaggerated, since in the story , they go to war and kill people, this being their job, just like in real life.
Turning to the numbers, according to Variety magazine , the new Tom Cruise movie has passed $400 million grossed, surpassing the Multiverse which has hit $398 million since its release. And the trend is for him to continue at the top, as the next big releases are also from Marvel, but they don’t include Spider-Man, Captain America or Iron Man, which are the biggest hits.
