A diplomatic flight from Russia had its duration increased by three times after several detours.
Western sanctions on Russia have caused companies in the country to stop most of their international flights, limiting it only to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and other Moscow-aligned or neutral countries. The same is true for official, humanitarian or diplomatic flights, although exceptions have been made, as was the case with a flight to the US, which was under constant surveillance.
It was in this context that a flight from Rossiya, one of Russia’s state-owned airlines, took off from Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport to Basel, on the triple border between France, Germany and Switzerland. Carried out by the classic Ilyushin IL-96-300 quadrijet, the flight took 9 hours instead of the 3 hours that a direct flight would take.
The airspaces of Ukraine, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Italy, Greece, Hungary and others were avoided.
The only countries that have sanctions against Moscow and allow the passage were France and Switzerland, which jointly operate the Euro-Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. So far, the reason that led to the visit of IL-96 to the triple border has not yet been detailed.
