All major US airlines have confirmed that they will offer non-binary booking options for passengers who do not identify as male or female by 2024. for completion was set for 2024.
The information was confirmed in a note from Airlines for America (A4A), the association of United States airlines, noting that updates to the reservation systems are ongoing. In the meantime, the group says its airlines will provide information on their websites about how non-binary passengers can request that their tickets be manually changed to show a gender marker “X”.
In addition to the traditional gender identifiers of ‘male’ and ‘female’, airlines will have the ‘X’ option which shows that the passenger is non-binary, intersex and so on. Some airlines also include a fourth ‘U’ gender marker for undisclosed.
Among the three biggest
Of the US Big Three, the first to add an “X” and “U” gender identifier to its reservation system in 2019 was United Airlines, following approval by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). American Airlines has also added “X” and “U” gender identifiers.
The only one of the biggest companies still pending to make the change is Delta Air Lines, which foresees an adjustment by the end of this year. Other companies, such as Alaska or Hawaiian and the low-cost Spirit Airlines, do not yet have systems in place and require more time.
