Every year, Egypt fascinates people who are passionate about archaeology. And this year would be no different. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt announced last Monday, 30, the discovery of an impressive 250 sarcophagi and 150 bronze statues. Excavations started in 2018.
Estimated to date the items at 2,500 years, the find comprises objects that were placed at the feet of Djoser, one of the most famous pyramids in Saqqara.
The excavations were able to reveal mummies in a curious state of preservation, in addition to statues representing deities such as Anubis, Ozir, Isis, Amon, Min Neftrom, Huhour and Bastet, in varying sizes.
In addition, it is worth noting that the surprising discovery also includes the revelation of vases made of bronze, which may have been used during rituals aimed at the goddess Isis, a symbol of fertility in Ancient Egypt.
Fascinating Discovery
As for the time when the sarcophagi and statues were made, the discovery indicates the year 500 BC But it doesn’t end there. Mostafa Waziri, current head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, wrote in a note via Facebook that burial pits were revealed during the research.
In this discovery, a well-preserved coffin features what appear to be chapters from the famous ‘Book of the Dead‘, crucial to the passage of the dead from the afterlife in the civilization that thrived on the banks of the Nile.
Given the relevance of the discovery, the remains of the possible book were taken to the Museum of Egypt. At the institution, they will not only be restored, but also analyzed by scholars.
