On Tuesday, May 17, the German Volocopter, a pioneer in urban air mobility (UAM) aircraft projects, announced a strategic collaboration with Microsoft to develop a cloud system (“Cloud”) for the aerospace segment on Microsoft. Azure, which will address emerging cloud computing requirements for eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft), UAM and autonomous aviation.
Once ready for commercial use, Azure will support the VoloIQ digital platform, the operating system for Volocopter’s UAM services, and its subsequent transition to autonomous operations.
Volocopter plans to make VoloIQ its standard UAM operating system for all electric passenger and drone flight operations. Its modular structure will be vast, covering aspects such as reservations and e-commerce, commercial scheduling, operational network planning, flight planning, flight monitoring, provision of digital airspace twins, and vehicle data recording and analysis.
Volocopter and Microsoft will begin collaborating to ensure that Microsoft Azure meets VoloIQ’s needs for business operations.
Azure will enable VoloIQ flight and service support for Volocopter’s eVTOL aircraft (VoloCity, VoloDrone and VoloConnect), along with real-time ground infrastructure (VoloPort) support.
VoloIQ’s goal is straightforward: to provide complete digital transparency and greater real-time ecosystem efficiency. By utilizing this digital resource, Volocopter’s services – and all relevant process elements required to perform this service – will be easy to use and digitally accessible for customers, pilots, operators and stakeholders.
In addition, VoloIQ’s solid scope will expedite Volocopter’s transition to an autonomous air taxi service provider when the time comes, and bolster its efficient maintenance and infrastructure once operational.
