At the beginning of April, Embraer sent an E190 E2 model jet painted with a technological shark to tour Vietnam. Not least, with one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world and with two companies looking to upgrade their fleet – state-owned Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways – there are many opportunities there. But it will not be easy, as the competitor will, as always, be Airbus, with its best-selling A220.
If in May Bamboo Airways signaled an upcoming opportunity to acquire new aircraft, now it was Vietnam Airlines’ turn to confirm what it had also indicated before: it will replace its ATR 72s next year with regional jets. As expected, the Airbus A220 and the Embraer 190 will be on the table.
Discussions with Airbus, Embraer and leasing companies are ongoing, the Vietnamese airline’s CEO Ha Le Hong said at the Routes Asia 2022 conference in Danang, with a particular request: “that the new aircraft be able to service airports of short tracks. Con Dao and Dien Bien airports, two candidates to receive the jet, for example, will be expanded and classified to receive single-aisle aircraft at the end of next year, “ which gives us some time to decide which aircraft to choose ”, he stressed. the executive.
India is also at the center of the upcoming expansion of Vietnam Airlines, which currently does not offer routes there, unlike its low-cost rival VietJet Air and IndiGo. A part of these flights must be carried out with regional jets.
