In an unprecedented address to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this Wednesday (21) that he will call up about 300,000 reserve citizens of age to join Russian troops in Ukraine and has made nuclear threats to the West .
In his speech, unprecedented since the start of the Ukrainian war in February, Putin also said he had indefinitely extended the contracts of soldiers already fighting in the neighboring country and also announced increased spending on weapons production and made nuclear threats.
“It’s not a bluff,” the Russian leader declared. “(…) Our country has several means of destruction, some of which are more modern than those of NATO countries”.
Putin’s threatening speech worried the West (see below) and was made at a time when the Ukrainian government is carrying out a strong and fast counter-offensive operation, with logistical support from European countries and the United States.
In the speech, broadcast on TV, the Russian president also said he would support the referendums announced for this weekend in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia , Ukrainian regions invaded by Russia, to join the country.
Putin also said that Russia will use all the resources at its disposal to defend what he called “its people”, without explaining, however, what these threats are. Among the measures announced by the Russian is, in addition to funding the production of weapons, giving legal status to volunteers fighting in Donbass.
