After the discovery, an in-depth study of the place at the time they lived was able to explain the unusual size for the period.
During an expedition that began in 2016, a group of Chinese archaeologists found a strange archaeological site that could reveal a strange period in the country’s history.
With underground ornaments, a square in the middle of the production drew attention for housing different bodies from what had already been discovered by local archeology.
The encounter of several 5,000-year-old skeletons, much taller and more robust than the average height at the time, estimated in Europe at 1.65 meters, lay in northern Shandong. On average, the remains were about six feet tall, with the largest reaching just over six feet.
Although the largest of them was male, there were also female bodies in the average estimate. The above-average height initiated an intense investigation into the origin of remarkable bodily development and, above all, into the environment in which they were found, as covered by the government news agency Xinhua.
Height Origin
Not all bodies present in the more than 205 tombs analyzed during the archaeological expedition were complete; part of the height estimate was obtained based on the proportions of the bone structure, respecting the calcium development and relating the measurements to the rest of the limbs.
Thus, the so-called old “giants” were installed near the Yellow River, a geographic position that favored the environment for food crops with access to clean water, a humid climate and coverage from the sun. In this way, access to more food and abundance enabled the remarkable growth.
The main author of the research by the University of Shandong, Fang Hui , explained the phenomenon to the Chinese vehicle: “Already agricultural at the time, people had different food resources and, therefore, their physique changed,” he explained. However, the site’s facilities also aided in the discovery — also showing traces of ancient culture.
Past Habits
The first suspicions of above-average height for such a population arose from a basic principle of the team; there were male skeletons whose tombs were larger, initially being a possibility of demonstration of power in the funeral ceremony. After bone intercourse, however, it was possible to observe the development of plenty.
Around the tombs , several objects from the Longshan, Neolithic civilization whose historical records now attribute the rich food to the unusual size and strength for the time, but today completely possible due to the unbridled production of food. The artifacts are colored and made with pottery and clay.
Celebrated by the authorities, the deputy head of Shandong provincial cultural heritage division, Zhou Xiaobo , celebrated the findings and said they will contribute to local research: “Future studies and further excavations are of great value to our understanding of the origin of culture in the east of China”.
